Kim Jong-un: The enigmatic leader of North Korea
Early life and succession
Kim Jong-un was born on January 8, 1982, in either Pyongyang, North Korea, or South Korea, according to North Korean authorities. However, South Korean intelligence officials have questioned this date, suggesting that he was born in 1983 or 1984. His father, Kim Jong-il, began preparing him for succession to leadership in 2010. Upon his father's death in December 2011, Kim Jong-un became the Supreme Leader of North Korea.
Rise to power
When Kim Jong-un took power in 2011, propaganda described him as "audacious" - they were not wrong. He quickly consolidated his power, purging potential rivals and strengthening his control over the military and government. Kim has also overseen a significant increase in North Korea's nuclear and missile programs, which have drawn international condemnation and sanctions.
International relations and nuclear ambitions
Kim Jong-un's foreign policy has been characterized by a mix of belligerence and diplomacy. He has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons against countries that he perceives as threats, such as the United States and South Korea. However, he has also met with world leaders in an attempt to improve relations and reduce tensions. Kim's ultimate goal is believed to be the reunification of Korea under North Korean rule.
