Maria Sakkari has captured her first WTA title since 2021, defeating Marie Bouzkova in three sets at the Guadalajara Open. The Greek star, who was ranked as high as No. 3 in the world last year, claimed a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 victory over her Czech opponent on Saturday night.
Sakkari had a strong start to the match, breaking Bouzkova twice in the opening set to take a commanding lead. The Czech player fought back in the second set, breaking Sakkari three times to force a third set. However, Sakkari regained her composure in the decider, breaking Bouzkova twice more to seal the victory.
The win is Sakkari's first title of the season and the third of her career. She will now look to build on her success as she prepares for the upcoming Australian Open.
